Firstly, I would like to congratulate my daughter on successfully completing her first module on her P.S.H.E correspondence course with http://www.oxfordhomeschooling.co.uk/ Lillie has so far covered extracts from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, autobiographical exercises, the meaning of Family, considered careers and how our fantastic brain works.
She has thoroughly enjoyed working through the start of the course and even studied on the coach during our trip to Yorkshire two weeks ago. Since returning from that short break, Lillie has sent off her first tutor marked assignment which involved researching, as well as considering one of the career paths she would like to take in future years.
Lillie has a love for food - from preparing dishes, to assisting with the actual cooking and of course without any assistance, in the eating! Lillie enjoys dining out too and trying new dishes from around the world. One of her dreams is to own her own Café and a themed 1950s American diner. So, her first TMA was based on working in a café to owning one and a diner.
The assignment was to write 5 paragraphs on the set categories stated within the checklist, to make her writing interesting and to check spellings etc. Lillie's tutor awarded Lillie 90%. Now I know many home educating families do not agree with this area of marking, but as I have said many times, no two home educating families are the same!
Lillie chose to set out on this educational path and is very aware from my Open Uni studies that a mark or grade is awarded on completion of assignments, exams and end of module assessments. So, she is no stranger to this type of award and is very aware how 'any' percentage is worthwhile and NEVER seen as a negative from my own responses to the variable scores and grades I received during the 6/7 years as a student.
However, Lillie was and still is over the moon with receiving 90% on her first TMA and is more than ready to take on the second TMA - to design a poster or booklet on the importance of a good night's sleep in regards to our brain. She cannot wait to get all creative and send it off to her tutor before Christmas.
Lillie has also communicated with her tutor via email and last night they had a chat on the telephone. Lillie questioned her tutor on something in particular regarding the course and spoke maturely and confidently. Lillie was clearly enjoying this social side to her studies and it filled me with joy to see how she glowed with enthusiasm.
To end this part of the post I would like to let Lillie know for the millionth and tenth time how proud of her I am. This lifestyle is in one word 'amazing' and never ceases to amaze me. Lillie never ceases to amaze me and I am so grateful for questioning sending her to school all those years ago. This was certainly one of the best decisions I've ever made. To give an offspring the opportunity to grow at their own pace is the most natural thing to give them...
And to finish this post, well it's that time of year again when the shops are filled with Christmas, Christmas and more Christmas, children's hearts are filled with excitement and parents pockets get emptied!! But in my experience and thoughts when magic returns - I love this time of year, including the stress. So, Lillie and I have begun the festivities. Well, more so like two weeks ago on our shopping trip to Yorkshire!!
Last night saw my head stuck in the cupboard under the stairs!! By the time I was free again and the door secured behind me, to not allow what's inside to come bursting out, the boxed Christmas Tree and the 3 decoration boxes had taken up residence in one corner of the lounge in preparation for them to be allowed out for a month!! Lillie will have the job at her request to decorate the tree tomorrow and I shall put up other decs around the stairs, kitchen and hallway.
This morning, Lillie and I were out early to have breakfast and then set off to http://www.bluewater.co.uk/ for more Crimbo shopping. The place takes over an hour to travel to, by public transport and was heaving with bodies when we arrived! Anyone would think Christmas was on it's way! It wasn't long before we were all shopped out and headed for home. But, we had a lovely time amongst some moans and groans! I think we shall both be asleep not too late this evening to recharge for tomorrow's continual of getting into the festive spirit...
