Fun with phonics!

Lillie is currently facing a new hurdle when it comes to reading - she has covered the alphabet, some words & peoples' names read from memory & now the next barrier to the world of words relates to phonics! This is where the alphabetic fridge magnets have come in handy! The bright colours & relaxed approach makes it fun!

I usually ask Lillie to put the letters in alphabetical order while Im making a drink or emptying the washing machine! She realises she is being helpful at the same time as preparing for an impromptu activity. We usually start with going through the letter sounds together, with me following by myself - I deliberately make errors to cause a giggle & to teach Lillie that adults make mistakes too! After, Lillie will take the lead with a giggle also being made when she gets any sounds wrong. I suppose the hardest letter for a beginner to sound out is 'Y' - this greedy little devil has 3 to remember! At the end of the activity Lillie gets a big kiss & a 'well done', then we move onto something else together or separately!

A little tip thanks to the Cbeebies phonics programme - the letters 'C' & 'K' have the same sounds. Perhaps, by saying 'Curly ker' for the 'C' sound & 'Kicking ker' for the 'K' sound may aid simple spelling activities . I hear another fun game coming our way soon..........!!!!!
