Firstly, today is Burns' Day - well Burns' Night now! So, Happy Burns' Night....
On with the posting - Lillie was given a challenge to find out as much as she can about Scotland's National Bard. This challenge came from one of my clients yesterday. He also knows we have some Scottish blood running through our veins and that Lillie has been actively working on her Family Tree. So, felt she would enjoy covering some Scottish history too!!
Robert Burns (25th January 1759 - 21st July 1796)
Born in Ayrshire, died in Dumfries
Occupation: Poet, lyricist, farmer and Exciseman
Wrote 'Auld Lang Syne'
Was HOME EDUCATED at times by his SELF EDUCATED father, William
His funeral took place on the day his son Maxwell was born
Since his death, Burns' Night can take place on any day of the year, but 25th January is a special day for celebration - his birthday.
The Burns' Supper occurs on Burns' Night. The usual format being:
General welcome
Announcements
Selkirk Grace
Piping and cutting of the Haggis
"Address to the Haggis" is read
Haggis cut open
Eating and reading of the "Immortal Memory"
An overview of Burns' life and works
Concludes with "Auld Lang Syne"
Lillie enjoyed this activity and my client was very impressed by the efforts put into engaging with his challenge. He told me to say, "well done, Lillie" on his behalf. I'm glad he set it. Lillie has also remembered some of the facts we discovered, when we spoke more about it today. And even more when prompted. She has even wondered if we are one of the 600+ Burns descendants around today. Who knows at this moment in time. Would be nice.
I wonder how many classes in the UK's schools focused on Robert Burns at some point today - sadly my guess is probably not that many. And some people knock Home Education and/or assume our kids are not 'on track' compared to school kids, academically and socially!! Please, gimme a break!! Enough said... Perhaps they should give it a go for themselves, especially the ones who are not happy with their child's place of school. Something I hear often...
